SUPREME COURT FIRES ON UPSC JIHAD SHOW
"In the name of media freedom, it is impossible to do that. Freedom of the press is not absolute. It is reprehensible that the media house has acted to tarnish the image of UPSC, the highest civil service body in the country. The Supreme Court has set fire to the controversial Sudarshan TV.
Noida-based Hindi news channel 'Sudarshan TV' has been a focal point for controversy with anti-Muslim articles since its inception. Former IAS officers Amitabh Pandey and Nav Rekha Sharma have filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking an immediate halt to the 'UPSC Jihad' program aired on the channel. A three-judge bench headed by Justice DY Chandrachud heard the case on Tuesday. On this occasion, the judges made harsh remarks on the behavior of media companies, including Sudarshan TV.
Recently, Sudarshan TV aired a series of articles titled 'UPSC Jihad' alleging that a large number of Muslims were infiltrating the civil service and treating it as a jihad with the intention of devouring the country. Despite a demand to ban the program last August, the court refused. Even after the 'UPSC Jihad' episodes aired, the highest position was to err on the side of caution.
Sudarshan TV's lawyer argued that the articles aired under the name 'UPSC Jihad' were not unconstitutional and that they would submit the relevant evidence to the court if necessary. ) The things being said are untrue. Even those that are anti-democratic. So you (Sudarshan TV) are harming the country, ”Justice Chandrachud said. The Center has issued Supreme Court notices to the Press Council of India, News Broadcasters Association, and Sudarshan TV over the controversy.
Another judge on the bench, MK Joseph, who heard the petition filed against Sudarshan TV, expressed displeasure over the behavior of the entire media houses. He blamed the manner in which the debates were taking place on TV channels. "The debate is not going in the right direction. The anchor is shouting loudly. It is not right for the panelists who have spoken against him to shut up. It would be a triple mistake to think of this as media freedom, ”he said. Although it is difficult to control the media, Justice Joseph believes that they need to exercise their freedom responsibly.
