DELHI NOTICES TO FACEBOOK MD | 2020
Delhi Assembly issues notice to social media giant Facebook It is known that Facebook has been hit by political heat recently in terms of hot content. Allegations of a change in hate speech policy in India, the largest market, have suffocated Facebook. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government has ordered a probe into the allegations and the committee has issued summons to Facebook.
DELHI ASSEMBLY PANEL SUMMONS FACEBOOK:-
Amid criticism that the BJP is controlling Facebook, the Delhi Assembly Peace and Reconciliation Committee is probing complaints against social media outlet Facebook over malicious content. Facebook India has issued a notice to Vice President and Managing Director Ajit Mohan to appear for trial.
NOTICES TO APPEAR BEFORE THE DELHI LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY ON SEPTEMBER 15NTH:-
The committee, headed by Aam Aadmi Party leader Rajendranagar MLA Raghava Chadha, has summoned the Facebook managing director to appear before the Delhi Legislative Assembly on September 15. The committee officially announced on Saturday that it had issued the summons on allegations that Facebook had incited violence and hate speech in the company. The committee sent notices to Facebook after a second hearing on August 31 concluded that Facebook had exacerbated the riots in north-east Delhi.
COMMITTEE ENQUIRY INTO WALL STREET JOURNAL REPORT CONTROVERSY:-
The committee is investigating a recent report in the Wall Street Journal. The report said Anki Das, a Facebook public policy executive in India, as opposed to applying hate speech rules to the accounts of BJP leaders. The Wall Street Journal reported that three other BJP leaders and groups were internally identified as promoting violence but no action was taken. The Wall Street Journal quoted Das as saying that his company's business in the country would suffer if an action was taken against BJP leaders.
ASSEMBLY PANEL SEEKING CLARIFICATION ON HATE CONTENT:-
Facebook executive Anki Das, who was the focal point of the controversy, also complained to Delhi police that she was in mortal danger. He mentioned the names of five people in his complaint that threats were coming on social media to kill him. The Delhi Police has lodged a complaint with the Cyber Wing alleging that some people were threatening to kill him and posting objectionable posts against him. The Delhi Assembly Peace and Reconciliation Committee has summoned Facebook to appear before the Assembly on September 15 and provide an explanation on the matter.
