BARC SUSPENDED WEEKLY TRP RATINGS OF NEWS CHANNELS
The Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) on Thursday announced a sensational decision on the Television Rating Point (TRP) scandal. It has been revealed that the weekly rating given to all language news channels is being suspended.
It said in a statement that it would not give any rating for 12 weeks. It said a review would be conducted by a technical committee on the criteria currently being followed in giving the rating.
To that end, Bark India Chairman Puneet Goenka and CEO Sunil Lulla said they hope to improve the standards internationally. It will take two or three months. In the meantime, it has decided not to give ratings to news channels.
The News Broadcasters' Association (NBA) responded to Bark's decision by saying it was a bold decision. NBA President Rajat Sharma hopes that the rating system will be completely purged and a new system will be introduced to win the confidence of the viewers in the country.
He also made an appeal to NBA members. "Irregular, compromising, irrationally tampering with the rating ... believing that the same Indian viewers are watching. The only thing I want members to do is to oppose such mall practice, pursue journalistic values , and pursue the ideals of journalism. "
It is learned that the TRP scandal has been uncovered by the Mumbai police. Cases have been registered against three channels, including Republic TV, on charges of fraudulently increasing TRP. Five have been arrested so far.
The Bombay High Court has made key remarks on news broadcast on news channels. It asked the central government if there was any system in place to check news articles "before the damage is done". The Bombay High Court today heard public interest litigation (PIL) filed against news channels over the death of Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Raj.
The tribunal also questioned whether it would be within the ambit of the law if the media failed to comply. "If the media crosses the 'feature line', Parliament will intervene. Shouldn't action be taken against the court? '' The High Court asked the Center for an explanation.
Meanwhile, the petitioners, including several retired IPS officers, have requested the court to stop a parallel media probe into the death of Sushant Singh Rajput. "If anything goes wrong, all government officials will be held accountable and fired. Does the same apply to private employees?
The bench headed by Chief Justice Deepankar Dutta and Justice GS Kulkarni said, "People are facing problems because they are not behaving properly." "If there is a similar mistake in the print media, you will be censored. But when it comes to electronic media, it doesn't even seem to have the idea of touching them. ''
Responding to arguments on behalf of the central government, Additional Solicitor General Anil Singh said that the Supreme Court was saying that the government should not infringe on media freedom and that the media should be encouraged to have a system of self-regulation. However, the High Court said that the Supreme Court judgments given by Singh were very old. "These judgments are from 2012-2013.
Now times have changed. Freedom is being abused now. " The tribunal recalled that the Chief Justice of India had recently stated that freedom of expression was being arbitrarily abused. The High Court said it had doubts about the effectiveness of the current regulatory system for news channels.
