TRP SCAM
TELEVISION RATING POINT:-
TRP assesses the tastes of TV viewers, their popularity on various programs, and determines the ratings of channels based on them. This rating is given on the general basis of whether a viewer has watched any program or any breaking news for a long time, which channel has been viewed most of the day, at any time, whether in prime time or non-prime time.
For this, meters are placed in many residences. These ratings are given by the Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) following the guidelines of the Telecom Regulatory Authority (TROI).
Police have exposed a Television Rating Points (TRP) scam in Mumbai. Police said the English news channel Republic TV and two other Marathi channels were involved in boosting TRPs. Senior officials of Marathi channels were arrested in this connection. Arnab Goswami, a well-known journalist and news presenter, has not yet arrested anyone from Republic TV who is the editor-in-chief.
Mumbai Police Commissioner Paramveer Singh told media on Thursday that police were investigating a complaint lodged by Hansa, an agency that had contracted meter monitoring on behalf of BARC (Broadcast Audience Research Council) to determine TV ratings, and were also questioning the staff who had left the Hansa agency.
CP said it was clear that the channels were trying to tamper with the barometers set up by Bark in people's homes in different parts of Mumbai. He said Republic TV and other Marathi channels had agreed to pay the occupants to keep their channel constantly on. Arnab Goswami, however, denied the allegations against his channel. BJP president JP Nadda has criticized the Maharashtra government for discrediting Republic TV.
